I selected the phrases for my coloring book to say what I thought might be most important to others within the activist community. But because the coloring book simply has the coloring pages without commentary, I thought I might use this venue to elaborate a bit on why I chose to include what I did.
“I will build bridges.”
Every day I hear someone complain that the problem with this world is that we’re divided. We, as humans, seem to have forgotten how to empathize with others. Or perhaps too many of us have decided that empathy is the first step towards being seduced to the dark side. Whatever it is, I do think we suffer from a lack of connection to each other.
Now, on a personal note, I actually believe that modern humanity is more connected and more empathetic than ever before, only we don’t see it because the very social structures and technologies which make it easier for us to communicate and travel and relate to each other also bombard us with examples of violence and hate and opposition. We are far more aware of how much we are divided than we are of our greater connections.
Still, we obviously have a long way to go. We can do the most good for the world not by fighting against those who oppose us, but by making stronger connections to those who are willing to embrace us. We ought to be focused on seeking out our allies, our friends and supporters, those who realize that if we stand up for each other we all stand to make more progress. In short, any movement to improve the world must seek to build bridges in order to succeed.
