I find it troubling that we give spirituality such a large chunk of influence in our lives, but we often give it the least amount of scrutiny and examination, even when we’re actively searching for a new spiritual environment.
We obsess over our academic paths, our career paths, our family plans, our future ambitions, but not our spiritual paths. Most people take what they are given by their families or cultures of origin, and those that don’t keep that direction either make an exact about-face or fail to stray far from that original path.
Why should our religious and spiritual pursuits be so unchanging or unchangeable? Why let the lottery of birth and circumstance determine so much of what we do and believe?
We ask ourselves what we want to be when we grow up. Why don’t we ask what we want to believe when we grow up?
