Is your spiritual path empowering?

It seems a simple question, and I imagine most people would say yes.

But being empowered means being given authority and power over something, usually your own life and existence.  Does your spiritual path really give you authority over anything, or does it encourage you to give up your authority to something else?  Does your spiritual path really grant you more power over anything, or does it ask you to trade your personal power for the protection of the power of the divine?

If your spiritual path is not empowering you, is it worth following?
