What’s a zine?

A zine (pronounced ZEEN; short for magazine) is a noncommercial, often homemade publication usually devoted to specialized or unconventional subject matter. Zines have been a significant medium of communication in various subcultures. and zinesters largely disregard the traditional conventions of professional design.

The concept can be traced to the amateur press movement of the late 19th and early 20th century. This intersects with literary magazines during the Harlem Renaissance, as well as the subculture of science fiction fandom in the 1930s. Punk zines emerged in the late 1970s, along with the increasing accessibility to copy machines, publishing software, and home printing technologies. The internet almost rendered zines obsolete, but thanks to the enshittification of social media, they’re enjoying a resurgence in popularity!

My zine journey:

I started making zines because I’m disillusioned with the state of algorithm-driven social media and the proliferation of AI use in witchy spaces and wanted to find an outlet for my ideas that better aligned with my personal ethics. So I started drawing and writing my witchy and spiritual content on paper, by hand, printing copies at home, and handing them out to folks in my local witchy community! No AI, just pencil, pen, paper, and printer.

Master List of Zines by Bridget Owens:

Looking for a specific zine? Use CTRL+F or Command+F to search for the title or keywords on this page.

IMPORTANT: I distribute these with no charge, and I’m trusting the community to do the same! You’re welcome to download the print files, print them for yourself, and give them away to as many other people as you want — BUT DON’T SELL THEM!

The PDF print files should be printed double-sided (flipped on long side) to get the pages in the right order, and then cut the stack in half. Each file makes two physical copies of the zine. I stitch mine together with embroidery floss, but staples work too!
